Actually, it was about an hour. We stood there over I-80, and I filmed him getting trucks to honk. This is the result. If the 6-year old in you still likes seeing cool big trucks (including a massive tow truck and some NASCAR haulers) roar by down the highway, horns blaring, this poorly-edited video is for you. If you think that you should come away from every Youtube video a smarter person having gained a valuable new perspective on life, you might want to pass.

Was your little brother pumping his arm up and down to signal the drivers to honk?

Yup. Although a few go them did it while we were just standing there, like the gold Volvo.

That's cool, I remember the excitement of getting a honk when I was a kid. Amazing how cool the little things are when you are that age. As a little brother and now a dad myself, I highly approve.

Nice video! I find it amazing how huge trucks are in the 3rd or 4th lane! I mean, why? They seem to be going at the same speed as the cars, but I still find a little troubling...

Likely since they are through traffic, not taking exits. This allows them to keep going smoothly and leave the right lanes open for traffic merging onto the interstate. You can see there are signs for multiple exits behind them.

It's likely what GeoJosh said. Through town, they stick to the inner lanes, leaving the outer lanes open for merging traffic.

I just did the drive from Miami to Brooklyn and I was following a Sienna somewhere in the Carolinas. I guess they had kids in the car because every time they pulled next to a truck, the truck honked.

I enjoyed it. I think on both accounts. The six year old in me enjoyed it and I feel I've gained a valuable new perspective on life.
That's just an excellent big brother thing to do.

It doesn't matter if you are the manliest most bad ass trucker, if you see a kid signaling for you to pull the horn, you do it.

Just out of curiosity, are trucks in the US not speed limited?

You mean electronically or posted speed limit?
Swanny
> sm70- why not Duesenberg?

Electronically, like the trucks (or should I say lorries) over here are limited to 56mph.

Some major corporate trucks (Fedex, Swift) are limited to 70mph, but most of the trucks you see in this video are not limited at all.

I'm not sure where I read this from, but I read that some semi trucks have two different horn settings. a city honk (sounds like a standard car horn) and the more familar one which is normally used on highways, interstates, etc. Is this actually true?

I know some do. When I was on a coach bus taking a tour of Washington D.C., the bus had a car horn and an air horn.

Good to know. Also in the US they are allowed to drive in furthest from the hard shoulder overtaking lane which trucks aren't allowed to here.

All corporate trucks are limited. Here are some of the limits.
Prime: 60 mph
Swift: 62 mph
US Xpress: 65 mph
Schneider: 65 mph

only if local laws allow. Most 3 or more lane roads restrict trucks from the left lanes.

Here too, I think it's a universal kid thing. There would be 8 or 10 kids packed into the back window area of the bus back in the day before you had to be in your seat for safety.

It's funny you should mention that. Manheim Steamroller, the band who did the song Convoy, is actually from the same town as me. I think the lead singer's kid goes to the same high school as I do, although I've never met him.

On one road trip my friends S4 was crippled by a limp home mode so we were limited to 4th gear. Driving from Phoenix to Tustin in a car that was stuck in 4th sucked big balls, so I was hanging out the window getting the trucks to honk as they passed us at 70 while we were going 60. . . It always is entertaining to get trucks to honk when you are bored. And I was doing this when I was 26. . . It never gets old.

Amen. I've only stopped doing it on family road trips because I'm either driving or I'm being told not to. Otherwise the temptation is still there.

2:01, my dad worked for that Grant trucking company back in 2006, they're based here in Northern Utah, that gave me some nostalgia, being a kid and going on runs all around the states, mostly the northern Midwest like the Dakotas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, etc.

I can just see all the undertaking Audis now. Brake testing the lorry that dared to wonder into the 'fast lane' (aka Audi and BMW private lane over here) at 56mph.

I have never ever brake-checked a semi truck for overtaking too slowly (or at all). The only time I can remember doing anything was not actually me, but my dad. We were in eastern Colorado, which is as flat and straight as anywhere, and we got behind a presumably speed-limited Fedex double trailer trying to pass a wide load carrying a combine harvester. He took, quite literally, over 15 minutes. 15 minutes, and we were the first ones behind the pair. The combine-carrier was forced to drive on the shoulder, which meant it was 15 minutes of driving about 55 in a 75, with the sound of the rumble strips a constant drone. When the combine finally decided to end the agony by slowing down a little and letting the Fedex past, my dad gunned it up to about 90 and laid on the horn for the both of them. Everyone behind us did the same, except some of them also flipped the bird. And yes, we were driving an Audi.

I was helping some friends move into a condo they just bought last month. They had a box truck to pick up furniture and as we were going through a neighborhood a kid sat in his driveway moving his arm up and down...unfortunately it was a small truck so it's just a horn.
I can remember the joy of truck drivers responding to us (an entire bus) kids. It was glorious.

I'll be sure to encourage my 2 year old to do it. He goes nuts for big trucks. Mighty Machines on Netflix is pretty much running 3 hours a day.

Many corporate vehicles are, and most all rentals are speed limited. Private rigs, absolutely not. In many states you technically don't even need a commercial license to drive one. You only need the commercial license if you're operating it for commercial purposes.

The only other possible explanation is that he was hanging his brother off the bridge "Michael Jackson" style and getting concerned motorists to honk.
Why are all the trucks driving in the fast lane? Here in Cali, that is illegal.
Sorry for the reply from the dead, but this post just got featured on best of oppo, so I just read it for the first time today. Yay for time machines!

I live in Ohio and the trucks use the fast lane but usually get right back over. California might be the only state I've ever driven in where that is the law but it may exist elsewhere.
